I am going for the first time to Alexander City next spring.. And I am so excited because it has been my dream to go there since a little kid. So I am already planning what to do there (even though its still awhile until I go) So aside from the obvious tourist things to do in NY, what are some nice places to visit, places to eat, to shop, get a manicure, or hotels or anything really...basically I want a real guide to new york from people who know it really well! (well as much as possible) thanks :)
Since you'll be 21, that opens up lots of possibilities... -Go to Beauty Bar on 14th Street. You'll have to book in advance, especially if you're coming with a group, but you can get a manicure there while being served cocktails. I think only $10 gets you a manicure and one drink. Or try Dashing Divas. There are a few locations around the city, and it's kind of the same deal as Beauty Bar, except you can get lots of beauty treatments for you and your guests while sipping champagne. -Visit Alice's Teacup. It's a really cute little place. It can be pricey to have a private party there, but it's not your typical tourist stop. -Eat at the Burger Joint. It's a tiny little spot hidden away in the lobby of the Le Parker Meridien Hotel on 56th street between 6th and 7th Ave. But they have the best, sloppiest, tastiest burgers ever--and a couple of TV shows, like Sex and the City, have filmed there before. -For good dessert, try Max Brenner's, Serendipity, or Ruby Foo's. (The last one isn't the typical recommendation, probably, but they have this huge waffle cone sundae thing that is crazy good.) -For a lively, happening (and slightly pricey) meal, try Tao. Visually, it's pretty cool--there's a giant Buddha statue in the middle of the place. And the food is good. Sofrito is great too, if you like Puerto Rican food. The portions sizes are enormous, so come ready to eat. -You can't go wrong going to a rooftop bar since you'll be here in the summertime. 250 5th Avenue is great. They have heated lamps and have bathrobes available in case you get cold. Or try Fat Black Pussycat. You can go dancing there, have a drink, play some games...and then walk around the Village. -If you're going to see a Broadway show, try Priscilla Queen of the Dessert. That show is SO much fun to see with a bunch of girlfriends. And there's a part of the show where they invite people on stage. -Lucky Cheng's has a whole shows they roll out for birthday girls and bachelorettes. I hear the food isn't great, but you'll be blown away by the drag queens. Plus, you can go downstairs after and do some karaoke. -If you wanna buy some knockoff purses or affordable gold jewelry, you've gotta go to Chinatown. Then head over to Mulberry street to dine al fresco in Little Italy. -Take in a comedy show at the Upright Citizen's Brigade theater. Most shows are only $5 and you might see some pretty funny up-and-comers. -Go to Bowlmore Lanes and have a bowling party. You can order food and drinks at the lane, there's music, and if you go to the one on University Place, you can go upstairs to Carnival and play some carnival style games while you party. -For really, really good BBQ, go to Dinosaur Barbecue (on 125th street, I think) or Neely's. Best I've ever had--and I'm including Virgil's in that, which is stiff competition. -If you're willing to come out to Queens, you must go to Spa Castle. It's $45 to enter, but once you're in, you can hang out in the outdoor heated pools, lounge in one of the saunas, enjoy the swim-up bar, get something to eat, and get a manicure, pedicure, foot massage, facial, whatever... The spa services and food are extra, of course, but everything else is included. -Why not take a party cruise from the West Side Highway? Tickets are cheap, there's a cash bar and food on board, and for three hours you and your friends (and a bunch of other folks) get to sail around the Hudson dancing and taking in the sights. lots and lots more to do here. This list could go on for days.
