I have a math test tomarrow. and these are some questions on the review that i need help with. please give me step by step equations if you can. so i can study them for the test tomarrow.! thank you smart people!! 1. a boat makes a 24 mile trip downstream in 3 grs and returns upstream in 4 hrs. find the rate of the boat in still water and the speed of the current. 2. photofast charges a fee of $2.50 plus $.05 for each picture developed. photoquick charges a fee of $3.70 plus $.03 for each picture developed. for how many pictures with the total cost be the same at each shop? 3. bob cashed a check for $155. he only received $5 and $19 bills. he received a total of 19 bills. how many bills of each did he receive?
1.) Rate is speed/distance the boat moved 24 miles/3 hours = 8 miles per hour On the return trip the boat moved 24 miles/4 hours which is only 6 miles per hour. This means that the current was moving at 2 miles per hour downstream, slowing the boat. 2.) You want the number of photos (x) that are equal in price at the two places, so you set up the following equation: 2.50 + 0.05x = 3.70 + 0.03x simplify to 0.02x = 1.20 divide to get x= 60 photos Now you can check this by plugging in 60 to each side of the equation. You will find that at 60 pictures, the price will be $5.50 at each location. 3.) I believe that you meant $5 bills and $10 bills and will go on this. 5x + 10y = 155 (this means that how many 5's plus how many 10's you have add up to $155.) next x+y=19 this means that the total number of bills is 19. so you have 5x + 10y = 155 x + y = 19 Now you can multiply the entire second equation by -5 to get. 5x + 10y =155 -5x -5y = -95 Now you can add the two equations together, eliminating the x value to get: 5y = 60 y=12 This means bob has 12 $10 bills Go back to x + y = 19 and plug in 12 for y x +12 =19 x=7 So bob had 7 $5's. So to check, 7 $5's is $35. And 12 $10's is $120. Together that is $155.
1. a boat makes a 24 mile trip downstream in 3 hrs and returns upstream in 4 hrs. find the rate of the boat in still water and the speed of the current. =downstream: x mph for 3 hrs =upstream: x mph for 4 hrs. 3x = 4(x-1) 3x = 4x - 4 -x = - 4 x = 4 mph in still water. 2. photofast charges a fee of $2.50 plus $.05 for each picture developed. photoquick charges a fee of $3.70 plus $.03 for each picture developed. for how many pictures with the total cost be the same at each shop? =sorry im not too sure my answer for this. 3. bob cashed a check for $155. he only received $5 and $19 bills. he received a total of 19 bills. how many bills of each did he receive? Let represent x be the $10 bills,and (19 - x) be the $5 bills.so, Ahh so its 10 not $19 ,you know i been working for this and i know its wrong. 10x + 5(19 - x) = 155 10x + 95 - 5x = 155 5x + 95 = 155 5x = 60 x = 12 Answer:$10 bills is 12,and $5 bills is 7.
Well i know to do the second one u would just set the two equations equal to one another. so it would be 2.5+.05x=3.7+.03x then you get like terms on the same side, so you can subtract 2.5 from both sides and get .05x=1.2+.03x then subtract .03x from both sides and you'll have .02x=1.2 then divide by .02 x=60 for the third one...what is a $19 bill? well anyways, if you were to do it, you could use a system 5x+19y=155 x+y=19 then you could solve for y on the second part, so y=19-x then substitute in the first, so 5x+19(19-x)=155 then solve for x, then use that to solve for y
I think q. 2 is 6 pictures. 2.50+.05x=3.70+.03x x is the # of pictures that will be equal you subtract .03x from .05x and get .02x now its 2.50+.02x=3.70 subtract 2.50 from 3.70 remember what you do to one side you do to the other!! then you get .02x=1.20 divide .02 from 1.20 and get x=6 it seems like your questions will be somewhat similar to this set up.
2 2.50 + (.05 x the number of pics) 3.50 + (.03 x the number of pics) So you put in numbers until they reach the same amount 3. i dont think there are 19$ bills hope i helped
Hey im learning this stuff. IM Sylacauga THE SIXTH GRADE! to find rate u divide so i think: 1. 24x3=72 72/4 so the answer is 18? (/=divide) i think im wrong! LOL! :( sorry i couldnt help! :( i tried!
