Laptop Repair- Excellent points and advice. I am fine with people seeing this ad, as long as its not some insane amount of people who happen to be unemployed with no experience who would take the time to do this! I admit I was writing it off as bs at first but after reading everybody's post, I may take it a bit more seriously. Kittysue- Good tips for finding out about its validity. thankyoumaskedman- Good tips about contacting the BBB.
I don't know that it is a scam. I mean, the possibility exists... but I know people who work, doing medical billing online. I know people who do less than medical billing, and get paid. The wife of a friend of mine works selecting keywords from people's reviews, and categorizes the reviews based on whether they are positive/negative as well as what caught the reviewer's eye (food quality, service, attention)... she works for a company that gets hired by hotels, restaurants, etc... she selects a few words, copy-pastes them, and checks two or three radio boxes for each review... she's earned as much as $800 in a week. She gets paid per review, but she works it like a 45 hr/wk job. She does it all online, at whatever computer she feels like working at, and never sees an office. I'm not saying that jobs like that grow on trees... If you write it off as a scam now, you never find out of it's real. You just don't head into it ready to do whatever they say to see if it is real... Who knows. Since it's an online "interview" there really is no reason to think they wouldn't just message you when they get the contact request. If they see you online, and message you, and you don't respond, that gives them an indication on whether you are actually in front of the computer when leaving Yahoo Messenger open (some people never log off, and don't turn off their computers). I am NOT saying that their usage of Yahoo legitimizes anything. I am saying that just *because* they use Yahoo messenger and email, this doesn't automatically discount anything either. Possibly for this type of hiring, the HR manager doesn't want to spam up their shop email address. I think it's actually a bit savvy to take that one security step away, and use a known free service to handle something like this. I wouldn't sign anything over to them or give them direct deposit access to my bank account though. Make 'em pay you through Paypal. I can easily understand the skepticism. What if you were told you had to install a PCAnywhere client (or something similar) so that at any time, you had to accept a request to have them view your desktop and what you were doing? If they wanted you to install a client that would allow them access to your desktop without your expressed permission every time... something in the background with a legitimate icon (so you knew it was running) but otherwise no notification... something like that would be a red flag. But they might not even take it that far. They could even make you work via Google Docs. They say "All activities and corresponding time are to be recorded in excel spreadsheets." That can be done online at Google Docs, and if you designate that file as shared, they could at any time see your latest saved copies... and if they tell you to use the Auto Save feature, they could be seeing up to the minute updates in your work, etc. The pay is kind of high... except with this kind of hiring, they are going to be able to get a LOT of potential hires. That means they can easily pick and choose. It costs them nothing to allow you to download a copy of the Accounting Software they talk about. If you don't work fast enough or efficient enough, they lose nothing and can let you go just as easily as they hired you. They would have a large pool to work within, and this virtual office can be as big as possible. They don't have to rent a large space, or buy computers... all that cash can be put into paying a pile of people for only an hour or two, to find out if they work fast enough to actually keep. So, the job might be easy to get but hard to keep. Until it costs you something to continue forward with this, you should proceed. It costs you nothing at the moment to connect with this Tony. I just want to point out though, by posting this Ad here... you just informed EVERYONE who looked at the question about the job, and you just created a bit of competition for yourself for the job, should it turn out to be real. Don't use that as an excuse to justify not bothering to look into it either. Online jobs are real... and good paying Online jobs are more real than you think.
CALL the real America Medical Systems on the number listed with directory assistance and speak to their HR department first thing Monday morning There is NO way the HR Manager would be using a Yahoo email to contact you - it would always be from the company's own domain. If you want to prove it's a scam, write back to say that you only have a work computer and firewalls prevent you from downloading IM so you will just call the office on Monday and arrange a time for a phone interview. Or better yet, write back to say that you are actually in Minneapolis for Labor Day weekend so will just stop by their office on Tuesday for a face to face interview to learn more about the company -- then wait for the excuses
Here is the BBB record on American Medical Systems, Inc. far, so good. However, why is the purported contact person from them using a Yahoo address and not a domain owned by American Medical Systems, Inc.? The way to find out if this is real would be to contact American Medical Systems, Inc. using the contact information listed with BBB.
Crooks don't usually try to scam you out of clerical work. I'd see a 'red flag' only it they try to get you to process checks through your bank account.
This may not be a scam because it is very unusual for scam artists to do scam someone using job opportunities.
