Washington is stupid if they actually want to start the next war before finishing the last one - especially in NK. Also, there's all that trade with China to think about... There is quite a bit to lose if US forces invade NK. I doubt it will be possible - unless we are looking for yet another bout of inflationary spending. (Military spending will eat up whatever capital a country has - even if that country is big & powerful.) It's bad enough for the US dollar that the Obama Administration authorized multibillion dollar bailout loans to large sectors of the economy. One more big bout of spending and we might as well kiss quick economic recovery goodbye - at least until the USD picks up again in value. Also, NK is rather mountainous - which can make any military campaign rather difficult - and any actions against NK by the US will result in the Chinese invading NK to keep it free of US influence. There is a treaty from 1950, I think, that says the PRC will come to NK's aid in the event of any invasion by a Western power. The only reason Beijing hasn't sent anyone to topple the Kim régime is because NK is useful as a buffer state to defend China's northeastern provinces - which have a lot of heavy industry concentrated in cities such as Shenyang, Harbin, and Qilin. It wouldn't be good for China or the US if NK somehow got a hold of all that industrial capacity. China does have a problem with refugees from NK crossing into its territory illegally. If the problem does get out of hand (e.g., repeated incursions into Chinese territory by NK military units), Beijing might see an invasion of NK as a necessity, at least to restore order and make P'yongyang do something about its refugee problem. China considers the US to be an enemy, pretty much the way we considered the USSR to be America's enemy 1945-1992. Of course the two superpowers never went head-to-head, but they did participate in plenty of proxy wars. So, no, I doubt the US will invade NK any time soon. After all, Kim Jong-Il is pretty much Beijing's b***h and if Kim does indeed use nukes against anyone, the Chinese will be the first to go after him. With the economic influence that China enjoys in East and SE Asia, they do not need some rabblerouser raising hell and spoiling the fun for everyone.
I think the US would put fighting North Korea as a last resort. We have no intention to do so. But, it does not mean the plan is out on the table. Honestly, in the past N Korea has broken the agreement before. North Korea is known for 'sabre rattling' essentially you make threats to scare someone. But almost always North Korea is just talk, and no real action. They are trying to get attention for themselves. This is a test of the new president and how he will react. They are aware we are still busy with Iraq, and we just sent 20+ thousand troops to Afghanistan to fight the Taliban. We don't want to be stretched too thin. It would be unpopular to wage another war. The Iraq war made our last president very unpopular. Think about it, we can't stretch ourselves too thin. Fighting North Korea on the ground would be mass casualties on both sides. A bloody massacre for all. Let's hope the North cools their jets and behaves like Gentleman and reaches out instead of isolating themselves. The U.S. doesn't want to fight North Korea. North Korea has developed nuclear weapons and is threatening South Korea. The United Nations is too corrupt and cowardly to do anything (its their responsibility) so the U.S. may have to. But I don't think Obama will do much. I hope somebody does something before N.
