OK, I wrote a check for my rent back in January and it was returned unpaid, so I brought in a cashier's check for the full amount, plus late fees and NSF fees. I thought all was good until Friday (5 months later) somehow they still had my old check and took it to my bank and cashed it!!! When I went to my bank they said it was perfectly legal since I didn't stop payment on the check. Florida Ridge yes, thinking about it now, I am pretty stupid, but this is an apartment complex and I guess I just trusted them when they said "we'll just shred your check". So, I am just wondering if anyone has any HELPFUL advise for me. I don't need people telling me what I did wrong, I am quite aware that I screwed up. I want to know if anyone knows how I can fix this mess. Thank you in advance, to all you smart folks out there!!!
Um, write a letter when next month's rent is due with the cancelled check in place of rent....
Write a letter to the complex manager and explain tot he letter what happened. If you paid them with a cashiers check, they should have returned the one that bounced to you. Put in your letter that the rent was paid, you were hit with a bank fee, and request a refund as soon as is practical. If they refuse than more drastic measures may be needed, but this is a good place to start. Greg Z --
