About three weeks ago, I received an email from a man who referred to himself as Prince Randy Zuthabi. He told me he was a Nigerian prince and he was the heir to a vast royal fortune. His letter was very long but he said that when he was a teenager he was sick of royal life and ran away from home. During this time he became homeless and lived on the streets of Nigeria. About two years after he started this homeless existence he found out that his parents had died in a car accident. He returned back to the royal household to claim his rightful title as one of the kings of Nigeria. However he said that in order to prove who he is, he needs to hire a lawyer and go to court. In order to hire a lawyer he will need 50,000 dollars. But he said it is a sure thing that he will prove his rightful place as king and he said the royal fortune is worth over 50 million dollars, of which I will receive 30 percent. I immediately wrote him back and told him that I am only 14 years old and that all I have saved is a 100 dollars from bike route. He wrote back very quickly and told me that 100 dollars will not cover his legal fees, but if I can get some of my friends to also send him money, it will cover the initial expenses and will be a good faith act on my part. One of my friends who refused to send any money told his mother about the Prince and she immediately told him it was a scam and then called my parents. My mother told me not to send any money and to stop emailing this man. Secretly I emailed the prince again and told him what happened with my parents and that I couldn't send him any money. He wrote me back a furious email and said there are many people who scam but that he was not one of them. He then sent me a picture of a Nigerian woman holding a baby. He told me that the Nigerian woman was the queen and the baby was him as a baby. She was wearing very expensive jewelery and a crown and it did seem possible that she was the queen. Prince Randy then told me that once he secures the fortune and sends me the 30 percent, my mother would apologize to me for not believing me. Can anyone tell me what the hell is going on here? I don't know who to believe at this point.
100% scam. There is no Nigerian Prince and NO money for you. You mother is correct, it is a SCAM. Delete that criminal's emails right now. There is only a scammer trying to steal your hard-earned money. The next email was from another of the scammer's fake names and free email addresses pretending to be the "banker" and has demanded you pay for made-up fees, in cash, and only by Western Union or moneygram. Western Union and moneygram do not verify anything on the form the sender fills out, not the name, not the street address, not the country, not even the gender of the receiver, it all means absolutely nothing. The clerk will not bother to check Kula and will simply hand off your cash to whomever walks in the door with the MTCN# and question/answer. Neither company will tell the sender who picked up the cash, at what store location or even in what country your money walked out the door. Neither company has any kind of refund policy, money sent is money gone forever. Now that you have responded to a scammer, you are on his 'potential sucker' list, he will try again to separate you from your cash. He will send you more emails from his other free email addresses using another of his fake names with all kinds of stories of great jobs, lottery winnings, millions in the bank and desperate, lonely, sexy singles. He will sell your email address to all his scamming buddies who will also send you dozens of fake emails all with the exact same goal, you sending them your cash via Western Union or moneygram. You could post up the email address and the emails themselves that the scammer is using, it will help make your post more googlable for other suspicious potential victims to find when looking for information. Do you know how to check the header of a received email? If not, you could google for information. Being able to read the header to determine the geographic location an email originated from will help you weed out the most obvious scams and scammers. Then delete and block that scammer. Don't bother to tell him that you know he is a scammer, it isn't worth your effort. He has one job in life, convincing victims to send him their hard-earned cash. Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money to a scammer. If you google "fake Nigerian prince email scam", "fraud advanced fee scam" or something similar you will find hundreds of posts from victims and near-victims of this type of scam. There are several sites where you can read up on scammers, how to protect yourself from such thieves and learn how to spot a scammer's fake emails.
Of course this is a scam - google Nigerian prince scam and see how many version of this scam have been reported over the past 10 years There is no prince, there is no "royal fortune" -- there is a scammer sitting in an internet cafe in Lagos who sent out that same email to over 100,000 people hoping one would be gullible enough to take the bait. This scam ONLY exists to steal YOUR money and identity. They will first ask for money for transfer fees or customs or taxes or other ways to get you to send money. As long as someone is stupid enough to send money, they will keep asking for more Then when they feel they have enough money they ask for the victim's bank account saying they are going to transfer money - but instead they are emptying out their account
