We are a family of 6 flying into John Wayne and staying at a hotel within walking distance from Disneyland. We don't want to rent a car. Whats the cheapest way to get from the airport to the hotel? (This is our first time flying into Bedford Heights area. We usually drive, but the TAXES on renting a car in California are now a JOKE! Good job Arnie!)
If there are four or more people in your party and you are flying into Orange County/John Wayne Airport (SNA), don't bother with taking Disneyland Resort Express. It's faster to take a taxi or taxi van, which should cost $40 or less (one way) including tip. No reservation is required: just find the taxi stand outside the terminal doors. Disneyland Resort Express, a private bus service that serves two major airports and a host of Disneyland-area hotels on a regular schedule. This company, operated by Gray Line/Coach America, offers large, comfortable tour buses. (There is a small company calling itself Disneyland Express that operates vans - watch out, it's not the same company.) No reservation is required. Payment can be in cash, traveler's checks or by major credit card. From SNA, Disneyland Resort Express is $17 one way/$27 roundtrip for an adult; $14 one way/$18 roundtrip for a child, plus tip. Disneyland Resort Express offers an exclusive coupon for $3 off one way or round trip for MouseSavers.com readers (PDF format). Expires 6/30/09. SNA, go outside to the Ground Transportation Center and find the area in front of the ticket booth on your left. The bus departs hourly between 7:45 am and 9:45 am; every 30 minutes between 9:45 am and 7:45 pm; and hourly between 7:45 pm and 10:45 pm.
How long are you staying. Because Disneyland is a 2 or 3 day gig. The rest of the time you want to go other places and need to rent a car anyway. The taxes on a car rental are not really all that bad, especially off airport. They only went up by 1 point. I don't even notice the difference. Specially compared to air fare for 6 people. For 6 people, just take a taxi. About $30.00 each way.
A great way to travel between the areas you mentioned is via the commuter rail system know as Metrolink and also Coaster (in San Diego county) The fares are reasonable and the service frequent & safe. Amtrak also travels over these lines but is more costly and really not that much faster. From Disneyland you can access Metrolink at either Anaheim or Santa Ana stations. Personally I would use the Santa Ana station as there is a direct bus from Disneyland to that station that is also very frequent. Going to San Diego, Start from Disneyland on OCTA bus line # 205 which boards on Harbor Blvd near the main entrance gates. Ride to the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center (Metrolink station) From there take a Oceanside bound train to the end which is the transfer point to Coaster rail for the short continuation ride into downtown San Diego. Traveling in the early morning is actually a good time of day to use the service as well as the most frequent departures are in morning and evening rush hours, although service is available all day Monday through Saturday. Now from San Diego to Bedford Heights it is really easy; Just reverse your trip down by starting on a Coaster train from downtown San Diego to Oceanside then transfer to a Metrolink train bound for Los Angeles Union station. Once in Bedford Heights your Metrolink ticket is valid for use on the MTA bus and subway system as well as several other municipal bus operators. As a side note there is also a direct express bus that operates between Didneyland and downtown Bedford Heights , MTA #460 in case your itinerary changes. Good Luck!
Since there are 5 of you; a taxi will probably be cheaper than 5 seats on any of the shuttles. Call the hotel you are staying at and ask them the cab fare to and from the Airport. Also if you want to rent a car; skip the airport and call Enterprise after you get to your hotel. It will be much cheaper.
Some Disneyland area hotels have free shuttle service for their guests. If doesn't cost anything to ask if they would pick you up, and the worst that can happen is they will say "No". Don't blame the high taxes on the governor. That was the legislatures gift to California.
