I am a 23 yr old guy comming to California (Santa clara) to make my living as a Computer Programmer. How much money should I earn for a confortable living.? I really have no idea about US and its my first trip outside India( a lil scared too!). At present I would be getting around 5000$ per month. So that amounts to 60,000$ p.a Would this do? and will I be able to save a few? Serious Replies Please! Your opinion would help me a lot to overcome my confusion. Thx to all those who reply.
As a Computer Programmer, I think you will make a decent living if you work for a good top business and location. Just a matter of getting yourself settled. A lot of the better jobs are in San Jose and such forth. Those who come from other countries are going to be a little scared. I would be too if I was moving to another country that I never visited or know anything about. Don't worry about it. I recommend you have money saved to help get you started, just incase of an "emergancy" such as not able to put deposit on an apartment if renting. Also, for gas, food and all that stuff. It is a god thing to always go somewhere with an extra from savings for 'just incase' situations. Property/rent is more expensive on the coast line. I would recommend to look around with realestate to find good quality locations, but at a cheaper rate to help start you off and can move once you are established and know your cash flow limit. Have a back up plan on job and job location as well. I honestly think you should come to US and check this all out prior to moving and risking yourself.
That will do for a start. be frugal and do not live lavishly until you find your footing here in california -- give it a year to see what kind of savings you have, and to see just how much you have to pay for things here. i live in ontario california and -- im gonna scare you here -- the cost of living here in california is very high, but the high side is that if you are single -- 5 g's a month should do you just fine. i hope you like it here, the weather is absolutely crazy
That is a start and yes you can live on that in California. Get sound financial advice from a professional. Your bank has an investment person.Don't seek to impress others with what you have. Peace.
If you plan on living in San Francisco area, it won't be enough. Some friends just came back because a 2 bedroom house = 1100 sq ft... cost $500,000.00
If you earn around $5,000 that would be totally fine. I think that would work out. Normally computer programmers make around $50,000 or more here in Glenwillow if you have a bachelors degree. Good luck!
It really depends what part of Glenwillow you live, all big cities and especially downtowns and beach areas are very expensive for renting and shopping. if you live in smaller town, your money is pretty enough.
