I have a William D Ford federal loan and I am pregnant. I am working 40 hrs. and do not qualify for a forbearance, but I am trying to save up for baby while paying current bills and cannot afford the loan payments right now. I will be on maternity leave soon and on disability. I am currently not in default...what repayment options do I have while on maternity leave? Is it possible for me to apply for forbearance while on disability? I am trying to avoid default...please help!
If you have not already done so, I recommend you contact (a phone conversation would be best) the U.S. Dept. of Education Direct Loan Service offices and ask you questions: 1-800-848-0979 Hours of service: Monday through Friday 8:00 am E.S.T. to 8:30 pm E.S.T You can also send an email by clicking the Email Us link on this web page: Loan Servicing Center Borrower Services Department P.O. You are making good decisions in that you are thinking ahead and you are doing your best not to default on your student loan. This is a good thing. Sometimes the best question to ask them is, "What are all my options." Tell them your situation. You are working full time, keeping current on bills, and you are pregnant. You have a baby on the way and this is causing a hardship. You have new medical bills, as well as baby medical bills, and you are trying to get some things for the baby. Ask to see if they can lower your bills. See how low you can get them. They may be able to lower them as much as to $25 a month, then the amount will go up every year or two. Then, when you are on maternity leave, call them again and let them know you are on maternity leave. You will probably be eligible for a forbearance of some kind. When you get back onto paying the loan again, make sure the payments go back onto the lower payment program. I hope this helps. Try not to get too stressed out. Everything that happens to you affects the baby. Best wishes! ... I'm just sayin'!
