I'll try to help. Amtrak offers very regular service between Philadelphia 30th Street Station and New York's Penn Station. They divide their trains into two main groups: --The Acela Express trains are very new, very fast, and very expensive. Unless your boyfriend is traveling on an expense account or is very wealthy (lucky you!), forget about the Acela Express. --The Northeast Regional trains are a bit slower, a bit older (but still in good condition), and much less expensive. These are the trains he should aim for. There's about one each hour and the trip will take about an hour and a half. Most Amtrak trains are all-reserved, meaning he must have a reservation made in advance for the specific train he wants to travel on. That means that there is a seat guaranteed for him. Here's what you do, assuming you are going to make the reservation and pay for his ticket-- --Find out what time he would like to leave Philadelphia. --Call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL and tell the reservations agent what day and time he wants to leave Phliadelphia. She'll tell you the train with a departure time closest to that. Give her your credit card number and she'll give you a reservation number. When your boy friend arrives at 30th Street station he can go to any counter and pick up his ticket. There are variations on the above (such as using the website or the automated ticket machines at Amtrak stations), but the above should work out fine. He could also take a combination of SEPTA and New Jersey Transit trains, but unless he's very strapped for cash and in no rush to arrive, Amtrak is a better choice. Hope this helps!
Any northbound Amtrak train leaving Philadelphia would stop at Penn Station in New York. He can also take the SEPTA R7 regional rail train from 30th Street Station, Market East, or Suburban Station in Philadelphia to Trenton and switch to a Virginia Transit Northeast Corridor line train to Penn Station. www.amtrak.com www.septa.org www.njtransit.com
