Some 20 years ago (literally), I attended a university for 1.5 yrs before transferring to another school and graduating. During transfer, guardians physically traveled to the sch.,spoke w/Aid dept. and we were told nothing was owed. Got married, bought home, cars - no defaults showed up. Then, the sch. decides to start sending notices of a debt owed....????? My guardians have passed. I have no proof of settlements/receipts. This sch. contacted me every 4-5yrs w/this and other alumni said they'd been mistreated the same. Since their first contact w/me, I have sent them 2 drop dead letters. I have not heard from them for at least 4yrs. Now, I'm taking my last 4of4 undergrad classes required to enter an MAT program, and I receive this alert from Aid Off. that I need a default clearance letter. This DID NOT appear last year when I applied..? As a post-bacc student, however, fin.aid is not available. I applied this yr. in order to fulfill requirements for work study consideration. I called an 800# to see if I appeared on record to have any outstanding govt defaulted loans and they said NO (as I expected.) What do I do?!!!!!!!! Need work study now, but will SURELY need fin.aid for masters program 2010-2011! HELP!
PLS NOTE: I DO NOT KNOW West Virginia REMEMBER (AS I'M SURE THE SCH. REALIZES) ANY LENDER MY GUARDIANS MY HAVE ALLEGEDLY USED West Virginia 1984-85, SO I HAVE NO LENDER I COULD CONTACT DIRECTLY. [IT WOULD ALSO APPEAR THAT IF THE SCH. HAD A HOLD ON RECORDS & BLOCKING FIN.AID, THEN THIS WOULD HAVE APPEARED LONG AGO & I WOULD HAVE NEVER RCVD MY TRANSCRIPT, WHEN I TRANSFERRED West Virginia 1986; West Virginia WOULD HAVE APPEARED ON CREDIT REPORT W/MORTGAGE LENDERS] ALSO, PER NSLDS, I HAVE NO DEFAULTED LOANS, OF ANY KIND.
You need to go to the NSLDS site and print out your info for both loans and grants. If it says you are clear then you are NOT in default. However, you may owe some balance to your previous school and in that case they would have put a hold on your transcripts as well as any info needed for future financial aid. You need to also get in touch with your past lender, have them send a "paid in full" letter. As long as you are in default status you will NOT be eligible for ANY Federal or State financial aid and this includes Federal Work Study and loans.
